I am rarely surprised or shocked by things... in my many years on this planet, I have seen more than my share of death, destruction, and mayhem..... but this week I was shocked...... A close friend of mine's nephew died a few weeks back.... he had been in a motorcycle accident a while back and had issues left with that and he was a known drug user..... far be it from me to judge anyone.
My friend called me the other day and explained that her nephew's father (divorced and remarried and moved to Virginia) had taken advantage of the fact that his son was in a motorcycle wreck and held several fund raisers for him to "help with medical expenses". I've been to lots of these things and they can make anywhere from a couple of thousand to 20 thousand if they are well advertised etc.
A nobel effort to help a son in need..... HOWEVER..... the son never received a dime of the procedes.... was pretty much destitute....... then the son died...... another fund raiser is in the works to "help pay for funeral expenses". Which would be great except the son's mother has already paid for it all.... The father hasn't had to work much over the last year.... probably due to donations from unsuspecting, caring donors who will be VERY upset when they find out the truth and I am doing everything I can to see to it they do.
A few years back there was a fund raiser I went to to help with funeral expenses for a good friend of mine.... as they do at these events, there was a 50/50 raffle, 50% of the money goes to the benefit and 50% goes to the raffle winner. I won the raffle..... close to 800 dollars was in my hand...... I went right over to my friends father and gave him the money.... they money was for a good cause, why would I take money away from that?
I wouldn't be so angry about it if it was just someone he knew, but to take advantage of your son's misfortunes to profit for yourself is lower than I have seen in a very long time.
